Carroll Football – A Rich Tradition…

The Archbishop Carroll Football Patriots have always been synonymous with winning in high school football circles.  In the late 1960’s, Richard Nixon occupied the White House, Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, Joe Namath backed-up his famous "guarantee,"  a generation sang at Woodstock, and Joe McNichol began one of the Delaware Valley’s elite football programs in Radnor, PA.  Carroll earned its first two Philadelphia Catholic League Football Championships and City Titles in 1971 and 1976 under McNichol, and it was under McNichol that Carroll installed the famed “Delaware Wing-T” offense.  The Wing-T has been the choice ever since, and it continues to be a catalyst behind Carroll’s success almost four decades later.

Throughout the decade of the 1980’s, Carroll alumnus and member of Carroll’s first-ever team, Kevin Clancy, led his alma mater as the Head Coach.  Clancy’s teams earned several playoff berths and four Southern Division Titles, but fell short of the ultimate goal – the PCL Championship – in four separate trips to the PCL final game in 1982, 1984, 1988, and 1990.  Former Philadelphia Eagle Burt Grossman was a standout on Clancy’s mid-1980’s teams.

Clancy’s top assistant, Jake Clarke, led the Patriots as Head Coach to back-to-back championship game appearances in 1993 and 1994 after assuming the helm in 1991.

Carroll promoted longtime faculty member and assistant football coach Dan Bielli to Head Coach in 1999.  Bielli quickly ushered in a new era of winning football that included three consecutive league championships in 2000, 2001 and 2002.  The 2000 team (13-0) boasts the only undefeated record in Carroll football history, and it is arguably Carroll’s greatest team so far, shattering the City League’s record book in several offensive and defensive categories.  The 2001 team, featuring future Notre Dame star wide-out and NFL player Maurice Stovall, won the first-ever back-to-back league championships.

Bielli’s eighty-seven victories in ten seasons make him the winningest football coach in school history.  By virtue of Carroll’s quarterfinal playoff victory over St. John Neumann in 2005, the Patriots became the winningest playoff team in Philadelphia Catholic League history.  The record now stands at thirty post-season victories.

Carroll Football teams have become known as much for their spirit and determination as they are for faultless execution and technique.  The combination has produced a winning tradition and a rich football heritage, which is now being entrusted to you.  Success on Matsonford Road is expected, not chased.
